Sugar Hill Has Vision for Gas Plant District
Sugar Hill Community Partners, a partnership with JMA Ventures and the Machete Group, is refining its plans for the Historic Gas Plant District in downtown St. Petersburg. The partnership was one of two finalists for the development when St. Petersburg Mayor restarted the process. Mayor Welch plans to publish a new request for proposals the last week of August and Sugar Hill is expected to submit a proposal. Spanning 86 acres nestled in the middle of St. Pete, with one of the most vibrant and walkable communities in the nation, the Historic Gas Plant District (formally known as the Tropicana Field site) represents an opportunity unlike any other in the Southeast. The new Request for Proposal process will ensure intentional equity, vibrancy and economic vitality for years to come. The City of St. Petersburg received proposals from two developers at the end of 2021. In June, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch began the new Request for Proposal process. The site is currently occupied by Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team. The Rays’ lease with the city expires in 2027. Proposals for re-development include plans with and without a new baseball stadium and call for residential units, to include affordable housing, office space, retail space and green space. New proposals are due by October 2022.
