The Julia Rejected by St. Petersburg Development Review Commission

The St. Petersburg Development Review Commission has rejected the plans for The Julia, a proposed 24-story residential development in Downtown St. Petersburg.  The project was the subject of opposition by local residents due to its size and issues with traffic caused by the parking structure.  Some residents expressed concern about how the geotechnical changes caused by The Julia would affect nearby buildings.  The commission members concurred and also found that the columns were out of place and other architectural elements go against the city’s building criteria.  The plans called for 20 condominiums, ranging from 1,962 to 6,388-square feet, along with amenities including a pool, spa, rooftop terraces, outdoor garden, and cold-water plunge pool.  The developer was in the process of revising the plan to convert to 36 apartments and had worked with the City of St. Petersburg’s Urban Planning and Historic Preservation Division to ensure the design was compatible with the building next to it, the Flori de Leon.  In rejecting the plan, the commission did not feel the developer made enough significant changes to address the concerns about the building design, aesthetics and to mitigate the impacts.
