Whitaker Lofts Gains Approval From Planning Board

The Sarasota Planning Board unanimously gave its approval for a proposed mixed-use development, Whitaker Oaks.  The proposal was initiated by the architectural firm Halflant & Pichette, Michael Halfant is a member of the board.  He recused himself from the item due to his company’s involvement.  Having secured approval from the planning board, the project now goes before the Sarasota City Commission.

Whitaker Lofts, would bring 20 residential units and 8,500 square feet of ground level retail space to Sarasota. The property faces the Whitaker Bayfront Park in the City of Sarasota and borders a new roundabout currently under construction. The site is located between 14th and 15th Street on the gateway connecting the Ringling College of the Arts to downtown Sarasota. South of the site is the rapidly growing Rosemary District that extends to 10th Street. To the West is Whitaker Bayfront Park. The site is immediately adjacent to The Reserve, a popular coffee shop, and is four blocks from the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the Sarasota Orchestra, and the city-owned 42-acre waterfront park known as the bay. The project consists of twenty residential units above high-end retail space. The dramatic design comprises of ten garden units ten two-story loft units above arranged around a raised courtyard. A dramatic monumental stair leads to the waterfront park. All retail spaces will face the new 14th Street round-about, an over-sized sidewalk, and the Whitaker Gateway Waterfront Park.
