The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame serves as basketball's most complete collection of the sport’s history and is devoted to promoting and preserving the culture of basketball. Dedicated to Canadian-American physician and inventor of the sport, James Naismith, it inducted its first class in 1959 and created a physical location in 1968. The current facility opened in Springfield in 2002, beside the scenic Connecticut River. The building is currently undergoing a five-phase renovation that began in 2016.
