District of Columbia Archives Update 10/30/23

New D.C. Archives Advance

The D.C. Zoning Board has approved the Campus Plan Amendment & further processing for the new District of Columbia Archives building at the University of the District of Columbia. The new building would replace Building 41, located along Van Ness Street NW on the southwestern corner of the campus. Building 41 is in poor condition and nearing the end of its useful life. The Project includes the demolition of Building 41 and the construction of a new state-of-the-art archives building.

The Project’s first level features a large lobby area, a multi-purpose room with movable partitions, exhibit space, a research center, and digital storage facilities. The Project’s second level will have space for archival staff as well as paper storage and cool storage for art and artifacts. The Project’s third level consists of office space, work stations, a pantry and lounge for facility staff, and records processing and additional textual storage space. The fourth level is devoted to housing the DC Records Center consisting of holdings that are still in the custody of the originating D.C. agencies but protected and managed by OPR. Office space for OPR’s Records Center staff and a research area are also provided on this floor to serve D.C. agency staff that may need to reference older records that have been transferred to OPR’s care.
