Finegold Alexander Architects Wins AIA New England Design Award for The Lucas
The Lucas, designed by Finegold Alexander Architects received an Honor Award at the 2018 AIA New England Design Awards. The Lucas is the transformation of a shuttered 1874 German Trinity Catholic Church. The concept is a building within a building - a steel and glass design that rises out of the massive stone walls to create a 33-unit residential community. The eight-story glass and steel building bursts through the former church’s roof with steel columns continuing the lines of the stone buttresses skyward.
The AIA jury noted: “The jury was intrigued by this adaptive reuse project, excited by the move of hollowing out a church and inserting an entirely new building. Reimagining the flying buttress for the twenty-first century could have been corny or clunky; however, these interpretations in steel subtly work. The addition is clearly contemporary, but in deference to the existing structure, a success in preservation.”
Each of the 1 to 3-bedroom units are completely individualized, based on unique architectural details. The existing Victorian Gothic features of the stone walls, tower, and arched windows are seamlessly blended with contemporary glass and steel. The design team sought to marry the old and new by retaining the architecturally significant landmark’s tracery windows, front doors, and other artifacts.

Renovations Continue on Historic Ames Webster Mansion
Interior renovations and restoration are ongoing at the Ames Webster Mansion in Boston's Back Bay. The historic property is being converted into three luxury condo residences. Existing murals, stained glass, and chandeliers will be preserved and incorporated into the new development's design. The conversion is expected to be complete next year.

Resale at The Lancaster luxury residences is Brighton’s most expensive condominium sale ever
A two-bedroom penthouse condominium at The Lancaster, a Brighton luxury building completed in 2015, has sold for $1.055 million, becoming Brighton’s first ever condominium sale north of $1 million. The penthouse went under agreement in only 50 days and closed November 30th, reflecting the increased demand for the rapidly growing Brighton submarket. The penthouse originally sold for $806,750 during 2015 pre-sales, about $638 per square foot. Last month’s sale price represents a per-square-foot increase of about $200; overall, the penthouse’s price rose by more than 30% in just two years.
The penthouse's sale represents the tremendous recent growth in luxury development in Brighton. A second nearby luxury condominium building, The Aberdeen at 1650 Commonwealth Avenue, is now offering 40 condominium residences starting at $600,000, with some priced over $1 million. The 1,264-square-foot Lancaster penthouse features two master suites with ensuite baths and three bathrooms, featuring amenities such as vaulted ceilings, panoramic views, spacious living and dining rooms, a gourmet kitchen with espresso cabinetry and granite countertops, two private decks and two-car tandem garage parking. Construction complete at The Lucas, boutique South End condominium building set within restored church
New Boston Ventures has completed construction of The Lucas, a sold-out 33-unit boutique condominium development that has restored and expanded the historic, 1874-built German Trinity Catholic Church. The former church’s facade has been fully reconditioned, and new windows have been installed within its’ original archways. A multi-story addition adorned with a floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall has been constructed above the original church, expertly meshing old and new. Luxury condominium residences have been constructed within the resulting structure, all of which sold out months before The Lucas’ completion. Condominiums feature state-of-the-art finishes; within the original church, condominiums feature unique details such as original arched windows. Historic Back Bay mansion will be converted into three $20+ million condominiums
Sheikh Fahad M.S. Al Athel of Saudi Arabia, who acquired the 26,000-square-foot historic Ames Webster Mansion in the Back Bay for $14.5 million in 2013, will convert the mansion into three luxurious condominium residences, including a triplex penthouse, each of which will be priced at over $20 million. The mansion’s renovation is pegged at $35 million, with completion expected in 2019. Construction is now underway per a Wall Street Journal report, with construction crews at work restoring existing murals, stained glass skylights, mosaics and chandeliers and constructing a new underground garage parking area.

Restoration of The Lucas' historic church facade and installation of a new glass curtain wall along the building's signature vertical addition are both complete, resulting in a stunning blend of old and new. Along the historic facade, new arched windows have been installed, restoring the former church to its' original glory. Finishing touches to the facade are now underway, in addition to installation of luxurious finishes within the building's common spaces and 33 sold-out condominium residences.
