Populous Selected to Design the New Rays Stadium

 

 

Kansas City-based architecture Populous has been selected as the design firm for the Tampa Bay Rays new stadium. Populous and MEIS Architects had submitted bids to design the stadium, which is part of the Historic Gas Plant District redevelopment to a committee consisting of four City of St. Petersburg officials and three representatives from the Tampa Bay Rays. MEIS Architects withdrew its proposal and the committee awarded the project to Populous, which was the frontrunner. The commencement of the design phase in November 2023 is vital completing construction by Opening Day 2028. The Historic Gas Plant District redevelopment, in addition to the new state-of-the-art ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team, will include a transformational development by the Hines Historic Gas Plant Partnership on the 86-acre site where the team’s current stadium sits. The project for St. Petersburg, Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay region will include nearly 8 million square feet of mixed-use development 4,800 residential units, 1,200 affordable/workforce residential units (on and off-site), 600 senior living units, 1,400,000 square feet of office, medical and commercial space, 750,000 square feet of retail, 750 hotel rooms, 100,000 square feet of entertainment space, including a concert venue to seat up to 4,000, 50,000 square feet of civic space, namely a new home for the Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, 90,000 - 100,000 square feet of conference, ballroom and meeting space, 14 acres of public open space, 14,000 parking spaces.
