Expansion of available office space within Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. South Coast Improvement Company has converted three former open reception areas into private office space for senior staff members, retrofitting the spaces with new ceilings, flooring, walls, doors and finishes while also adding a new smaller reception area. The $240,000 renovation took place across the business school’s fifth and sixth floors.

Now complete, the renovation project faced several restrictions given that construction took place in communal areas during the academic year. South Coast had to be mindful of busy staff and students and accommodate their schedules. Most major work, including framing and concrete pouring, had to be scheduled for off-hours, often beginning as early as 4 AM, and end before staff and students would show up at 8 AM. South Coast could not resume noisy work until the school day’s end at 5 PM.

South Coast overcame those challenges with strategic scheduling, performing painting and electrical work during the day and noisier work such as drilling, cutting, coring and fire alarm installation between 5 PM and 8 AM. Daytime hours were also used for delivery of construction materials and measurements, so the South Coast team would ready to go as soon as the schedule allowed for noisy work. South Coast would often work into the night and on weekends in order to ensure the project’s timely progression, and meet weekly with Boston University staff to communicate regarding scheduling and coordinating work around upcoming events.
