Cambridgeside Redevelopment

Updated Plans Under Review for Cambridgeside Redevelopment Updated plans are under review for the redevelopment of the Cambridgeside mall. The plans would add 575,000 square feet of office, lab, and residential space in buildings between 85 and 155 feet high. The residential portion of the project would feature around 200 units, with 65% designated affordable. Plans call for a phased project with the development of Macy's, Sears, and the Canal Park in the first phase.


The Newbury Boston

Additional $3.5M Permit Pulled for Newbury Hotel Renovations Columbia Construction has pulled an additional permit for the renovations to The Newbury, Boston (formerly the Taj Hotel). This new permit, valued at $3.5M, calls for the interior fit-out of the 17th & 18th floors including a new commercial kitchen. The updated hotel will include The Rooftop, an elegant dining experience featuring sweeping views of the Back Bay. Construction for The Newbury, Boston is expected to wrap up before the end of the year.


Union Point

Interior Finishing Nearly Complete for Fairing Way Final Phase at Union Point Interior finishing is wrapping up for the final phase of Fairing Way within Union Point. The building will include a total of 107 units of assisted living, 70% of which are already sold. The first phase of the project features a 104 residential unit senior living community with a clubhouse and a 46 bed, on-site, long term care nursing facility.


The Newbury Boston

Construction Continues on Renovations to The Newbury Boston Construction continues on the renovation of the The Newbury Boston, formerly the Taj. Work is underway to move the main entrance from Arlington Street to the building’s frontage on Newbury Street. The project will also permanently enclose the existing seasonal rooftop restaurant, update the hotel rooms and add 16 new hotel rooms for a total of 211 rooms. The updates hotel is expected to open this year.


Union Point

Brookfield Properties & New England Development Named New Master Developers for Union Point Brookfield Properties in partnership with New England Development have been named the new master developer for Union Point in Weymouth. The group will be the 4th master developer for the nearly 1500 acre site. The decision comes months after LStar was terminated from the project in February 2019. Long term plans for the site call for nearly 4,000 housing units, up to 6 million square feet of commercial space, plus ample open space.

$5.685M Permit Pulled for Rooftop Renovations to the Newbury Boston A permit valued at $5.685M has been pulled for rooftop renovations at the Newbury Boston (formerly the Taj Hotel). The work calls for selective demo plus masonry restoration, glazing, drywall, and paint. Also included is new electrical that will provide a core and shell for the future restaurant that will occupy the renovated rooftop. This work is part of the larger renovation that will also move the hotel's main entrance to Newbury Street and update the existing guest rooms. Construction is expected to wrap in 2020.


Cambridgeside Redevelopment

Cambridge City Council Approves Zoning to Make Way for Cambridgeside Redevelopment  The Cambridge City Council has approved new zoning for the Cambridgeside Mall site that will allow New England Development to add 575,000 square feet to the existing space in buildings up to 155 feet. As part of the zoning change, the redevelopment will require 30% of that new space to be housing, with 65 percent of that housing set aside for middle or lower-income residents. New England Development also pledged $90 million in community benefits as part of the project that will include housing, office/lab space, plus more ground-level open space.     


Allston Yards

Allston Yards Project Approved The 1.23-million-square-foot redevelopment of the 11-acre Stop & Shop supermarket property in Allston has been approved by the BPDA. The project will feature a total of 4 buildings to include 868 residential units (148 affordable), 352,000 square feet of office/research space, 50,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space, a new home for Stop and Shop, plus 10,000 square feet for community or art use. As part of the project, $20M of transportation improvements are also included in the first phase of the development. Additionally, the development team has committed to a first of its kind Allston Brighton Homeowner Fund which will provide $2M to be dedicated for down payment assistance, “gap” funding, support for CDC homeownership programs, home repair loans, and Homebuying 101 classes. The funds will be held and managed by local partners: Brighton Marine, Allston Brighton CDC, and the Boston Home CenterFund. Michael Barelli, Vice President, New England Development tells BLDUP, “We are proud to have earned the support of the Allston-Brighton community and the BPDA Board on this exciting project. We anticipate a groundbreaking later in 2020."

Door Moved at The Newbury Boston Formerly The Taj, the historic Boston hotel is nearly complete after an extensive renovation. The door moving from Arlington Street to Newbury Street is one of the finish touches to the building facade. The hotel is expected to be open to next again by next year.

Electrical Permit Pulled The Newbury Boston An electrical permit has been pulled as part of the ongoing renovations at what is now The Newbury Boston (formerly The Taj). The $1.69M permit was pulled by Aldon Electric. Renovations to the historic building will include updated rooms and the enclosure of the seasonal rooftop. A main part of the renovation will also move the main entrance of the hotel from Arlington Street to Newbury St. Construction is expected to be complete early next year.

Plumbing Demo Permit Pulled for Taj Hotel A permit has been pulled to remove plumbing work at The Taj Hotel, part of the amenity demo for the hotel's approved upcoming renovations. The renovation plans call for updates to guest rooms, permanent enclosure of the rooftop restaurant plus the relocation of the main entrance from Arlington St. to Newbury Street.
