High Line Moynihan Connector Update 07/10/23

High Line Connector Bridge Opens to the Public

General contractor, Turner Construction, has fully wrapped up work on an elevated expansion of the High Line in Hudson Yards. Known as the High Line Moynihan Connector, this clever piece of infrastructure is now open to the public, giving pedestrians direct access to one of the city's coolest parks.

Developed through a public-private partnership, consisting of Brookfield Properties, Friends of the High Line, and Empire State Development, the connector comes as a simple and cohesive solution for shuttling foot traffic between Penn Station and the High Line. This was previously an indirect journey that required pedestrians to navigate several blocks while traversing a number of busy streets along the way.

Architectural firms, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and James Corner Field Operations jointly designed the connector, which consists of two, 600-foot-long bridge sections, spanning from the existing elevated infrastructure at High Line Park, down 30th Street, and up a block on Dyer Street to Brookfield's newly completed, Manhattan West complex. From Manhattan West, pedestrians can then walk directly across the street to Moynihan Train Hall.

But while the connector is purpose-built to serve as an efficient piece of public infrastructure, the best part about it is that it doubles as a beautiful way to get to where you're going.

While the span on 30th Street closely resembles the rest of the High Line, essentially acting as an extension with its large plantings and flowerbeds, the span crossing over to Manhattan West consists of a massive, wooden truss-style bridge. It's an eye-catching piece of engineering that you won't find anywhere else in Manhattan, and it makes for a unique architectural contrast, sitting beneath a collection of modern, glass skyscrapers.
